24.10.2024 - Public reading with author Michael Wildenhain and Steffen Staab
We are pleased to announce our upcoming event which is being held in cooperation between the Reinhold-Maier-Foundation Baden-Württemberg and the ELLIS Unit Stuttgart: Author Michael Wildenhain will present his book “A Brief History of Artificial Intelligence” followed by a discussion with ELLIS Unit Stuttgart member and ELLIS Fellow Steffen Staab.
Artificial intelligence (AI) is on everyone’s lips. However, what exactly is meant by this often remains quite unclear, precisely because AI serves so many fears, but also dreams. Intelligent machines that take over and take over human activities, that could replace jobs, partnerships or even governments, are causing a stir.
With the launch of ChatGPT in November 2022, the debate about the use of artificial intelligence has reached another high point. This AI-supported language model has the potential to profoundly change our society and our working model. Author Michael Wildenhain takes this as an opportunity to shed light on the development of artificial intelligence from a historical perspective in his book “A Brief History of Artificial Intelligence”. Using key events and developments as well as biographies such as the writer Mary Shelley and the programming pioneer Alan Turing, he describes the development of AI.
To what extent can AI systems be described as intelligent? Does artificial intelligence have the potential to develop its own consciousness? And what image of humanity is behind the development of AI? These and other questions will be discussed with author Michael Wildenhain and Prof. Dr. Steffen Staab, Director of the Institute for Artificial Intelligence at the University of Stuttgart and Member of the ELLIS Unit Stuttgart.
